The essential fuel for a day of castle exploration
Yorkshire has more medieval castles than almost any other county in England. They are spread across the Dales, the Vale of York, and the North York Moors — and Harrogate sits at the geographic centre of all of them.
Most visitors make the mistake of trying to base themselves near a single castle. The result is either a long drive to reach the others, or a series of hotel changes that eats into the time you came to spend exploring. Harrogate solves this problem.
From St. Mary's Walk, you can reach Skipton, Bolton, and Middleham in a single Dales loop. You can visit Knaresborough, York, and Pontefract in a Vale of York day. Helmsley, Pickering, and Richmond are all within the hour to the north and east. One check-in. No repacking. A full Yorkshire breakfast every morning.
"After a day exploring the ramparts of Skipton or the ruins of Middleham, the best part of the trip is returning to the peace of St. Mary's Walk. The same comfortable room. A full Yorkshire breakfast in the morning."

Ripley Castle is 3 miles north of Lamont House — approximately 8 minutes by car. It has been home to the Ingilby family for over 700 years, and the castle, gardens, and deer park are open to visitors year-round. The village of Ripley itself is one of the most attractive in North Yorkshire. It makes an easy evening visit or a gentle start to a longer castle day.
Each route is designed as a single day from Lamont House — with a suggested order, approximate driving times, and notes on what to combine. All times are approximate and based on typical traffic conditions.
Skipton · Bolton · Middleham
The most rewarding single day from Harrogate. Drive west to Skipton — one of England's best-preserved medieval castles, still fully roofed after 900 years — then north through Wharfedale into Wensleydale. Bolton Castle rises dramatically from the valley floor; Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for six months in 1568. Middleham, a few miles further, was Richard III's childhood home and later his principal seat of power. The return to Harrogate takes you through some of the finest Dales scenery in England.
One of England's most complete medieval castles — still fully roofed. The 14th-century gatehouse and Tudor courtyard are exceptional.
14th-century Wensleydale fortress. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here 1568–69. Still owned by the Scrope family descendants.
Richard III's childhood home and principal northern seat. The great keep is one of the largest in England. English Heritage.

Knaresborough · Spofforth · Clifford's Tower · Pontefract
A day that begins just three miles from Lamont House. Knaresborough Castle sits above the River Nidd with one of the finest views in North Yorkshire. Spofforth, a short detour south, is a free English Heritage ruin with a surprisingly intact great hall — often overlooked and rarely crowded. York's Clifford's Tower is the most visible remnant of the city's Norman castle, set on a dramatic mound above the River Ouse. Pontefract, further south, is where Richard II is believed to have died — the ruined keep is free to enter and the history is extraordinary.
Medieval clifftop castle above the River Nidd. The museum tells the story of the Civil War siege. Also reachable by train — 15 minutes from Harrogate station, no car needed.
A Percy family stronghold, now a quiet English Heritage ruin. Free entry. Rarely visited — an excellent hidden gem.
The keep of York Castle, set on a Norman motte above the River Ouse. One of the most significant Norman monuments in England.
Where Richard II is believed to have died in 1400. A ruined but evocative site. Free entry — one of Yorkshire's most underrated castles.

Helmsley · Pickering · Richmond
The longest day in terms of driving, but the most varied in scenery. Helmsley Castle sits in a handsome North York Moors market town, with Rievaulx Abbey just three miles away — combining both in a morning is very achievable. Pickering Castle is a well-preserved motte-and-bailey fortification and the southern gateway to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Richmond, the furthest point, rewards the effort: a Norman keep above the River Swale, in one of the most attractive market towns in the north of England.
Medieval castle in the North York Moors. Combine with Rievaulx Abbey (3 miles away) for a full morning. English Heritage.
Motte-and-bailey fortification. English Heritage. Gateway to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway — combine with a steam train journey.
Norman castle above the River Swale. One of the best-preserved Norman keeps in England. The market town itself is worth an hour.

The practical advantage of Harrogate as a base is simple: you unpack once. Every morning you leave from the same address, and every evening you return to the same comfortable room. There is no time lost to hotel check-ins, no repacking between sites, and no compromise on where you sleep.

Comfortably, yes. The Dales Castles day (Skipton, Bolton, Middleham) involves around 2.5 hours of driving in total, leaving plenty of time to explore each site. The Vale of York day (Knaresborough, Spofforth, Clifford's Tower, Pontefract) is similar. Mike and Helen are happy to help plan your route when you book.
For Skipton Castle and Bolton Castle, booking in advance is advisable in peak season (July–August). English Heritage sites (Middleham, Helmsley, Pickering, Richmond, Clifford's Tower, Spofforth) can usually be visited without pre-booking, though English Heritage members enter free. Pontefract Castle is free and requires no booking.
Skipton Castle is the most complete and arguably the most impressive — still fully roofed after 900 years, with a remarkable Tudor courtyard. Bolton Castle is the most dramatic in terms of setting and history (Mary Queen of Scots). Middleham is the most significant historically (Richard III). All three are within a single day's drive from Harrogate.
Skipton Castle is approximately 20 miles from Lamont House — around 30 minutes by car on the A59 west. Skipton itself is a pleasant market town worth an hour of your time before or after the castle.
Harrogate is exceptionally well-placed for Yorkshire history. Within one hour's drive you have 11 medieval castles, Fountains Abbey (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 20 minutes), Rievaulx Abbey, Kirkham Priory, and the city of York with its Minster, Roman walls, and Viking heritage. No other town in North Yorkshire puts so much within such easy reach.
Contact Mike and Helen directly to check availability and discuss your itinerary. They can advise on the best route for the castles you want to see, suggest where to stop for lunch, and ensure your room is ready when you return each evening.
