About Harrogate

England's most elegant spa town

Harrogate is one of England's best-preserved Victorian spa towns — wide tree-lined streets, formal gardens, and a sense of unhurried elegance that has survived intact. It is not a theme park version of England. It is the real thing.

Betty's Café Tea Rooms — the most celebrated tearoom in the north of England — is a five-minute walk from Lamont House. The Victorian Turkish Baths, still operating in their original 1897 Moorish interior, are six minutes away. The Valley Gardens, twenty-seven acres of formal parkland, are on your doorstep.

Harrogate's real value is its position. It sits at the centre of a triangle formed by York, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors — three of England's most rewarding destinations, each within an hour.

Questions & Answers

Planning your visit

How do I get from Italy to Harrogate?+

The most convenient route is to fly from Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino, or Venice Marco Polo to Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA). Flight time is approximately 2 hours. From LBA, a taxi to Harrogate takes around 20 minutes and costs approximately £25–35. Alternatively, fly into Manchester Airport and take a direct train to Harrogate (about 1 hour 15 minutes). Ryanair, easyJet, and Jet2 all serve Leeds Bradford from Italian airports.

What makes Harrogate special?+

Harrogate is one of England's most beautiful spa towns — a Victorian masterpiece of elegant architecture, formal gardens, and refined hospitality. Betty's Tea Room, founded in 1919, is one of England's most celebrated tea rooms and is a 10-minute walk from Lamont House. The Valley Gardens and Harlow Carr (an RHS garden) are within easy reach. The town has a calm, unhurried quality that feels genuinely English rather than tourist-facing.

Is Harrogate a good base for exploring Yorkshire?+

Harrogate is an excellent base. York — with its Roman walls, medieval Shambles, and magnificent Minster — is 35 minutes by train. Fountains Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of England's most beautiful ruins, is 30 minutes by car. The Yorkshire Dales (the filming location for All Creatures Great and Small) are 40 minutes by car. Whitby, with its clifftop abbey and fishing harbour, is 95 minutes. Castle Howard — the setting for Brideshead Revisited — is 40 minutes by car.

When is the best time to visit Harrogate?+

Late spring and summer (May to September) offer the best weather and the most events. The Harrogate Spring Flower Show takes place in April, the Great Yorkshire Show in July. The Valley Gardens are at their most beautiful in May and June. That said, Harrogate is a year-round destination — Betty's and the Victorian Turkish Baths are just as appealing on a crisp autumn afternoon.

What is a traditional English breakfast?+

A full English breakfast — sometimes called a 'full Yorkshire' in this part of the country — typically includes back bacon, free-range eggs (fried, scrambled, or poached), sausages, grilled tomato, mushrooms, baked beans, and toast. At Lamont House, Mike and Helen prepare breakfast fresh each morning using quality local ingredients. We also offer a coeliac-safe option and can accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice.

Are vegetarian options available at breakfast?+

Yes. We offer a full vegetarian breakfast option and can accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Please mention any requirements when you make your enquiry and we will ensure everything is prepared for your arrival.
