Harrogate is one of England's best-preserved Victorian spa towns — wide tree-lined streets, formal gardens, and a sense of unhurried elegance that has survived intact. For visitors from the Netherlands, the garden culture here will feel immediately familiar: Harrogate takes its parks and public gardens seriously.
RHS Garden Harlow Carr is a 10-minute drive from Lamont House — one of the Royal Horticultural Society's flagship gardens. The Valley Gardens, twenty-seven acres of formal parkland, are a five-minute walk. The Harrogate Spring Flower Show, each April, is one of the largest flower shows in the north of England.
Betty's Café Tea Rooms — the most celebrated tearoom in the north of England — is five minutes away. The Victorian Turkish Baths, still operating in their original 1897 Moorish interior, are six minutes away.

Honest local advice: where to eat, what to skip, how to avoid the queues at Betty's
"Helen and Mike are the perfect hosts. This is the 4th time I have stayed with them and I wouldn't go anywhere else! The guest house is beautiful, so clean and spacious. The breakfast is delicious and there is a great choice."
The easiest route is to fly from Amsterdam Schiphol to Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA). The flight takes approximately 1 hour, and from LBA a taxi to Harrogate takes around 20 minutes. Several airlines including KLM and easyJet serve this route. Alternatively, you can fly into Manchester Airport and take a direct train to Harrogate (about 1 hour 15 minutes). Harrogate station is a 10-minute walk from Lamont House.
A bed and breakfast is a small, owner-run guest house — typically a private home with a handful of guest rooms. At Lamont House, Mike and Helen live on the premises and personally prepare your breakfast each morning. You get a full Yorkshire breakfast included in the room rate, a key to come and go as you please, and the kind of local knowledge and personal welcome that no hotel can replicate. It is a genuinely different experience from a chain hotel.
Harrogate is an excellent base. York — with its Roman walls, medieval Shambles, and magnificent Minster — is 35 minutes by train. Fountains Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is 30 minutes by car. The Yorkshire Dales are 40 minutes by car. Whitby, with its clifftop abbey and fishing harbour, is 95 minutes. Castle Howard is 40 minutes by car. And Harrogate itself has beautiful gardens, Betty's Tea Room, and the Victorian Turkish Baths.
Yes — Harrogate is particularly well-suited to visitors who appreciate gardens. RHS Garden Harlow Carr is a 10-minute drive from Lamont House and is one of the Royal Horticultural Society's flagship gardens. The Valley Gardens in the town centre are a 5-minute walk. The Harrogate Spring Flower Show, held each April, is one of the largest flower shows in the north of England. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden (UNESCO) is 30 minutes by car.
Late spring and summer (May to September) offer the best weather and the most events. The Harrogate Spring Flower Show is in April, the Great Yorkshire Show in July. The Valley Gardens and Harlow Carr are at their most beautiful in May and June. That said, Harrogate is a year-round destination — Betty's and the Victorian Turkish Baths are just as appealing on a crisp autumn afternoon.
