About Harrogate

England's most elegant
spa town

Harrogate is one of England's best-preserved Victorian spa towns — a place of wide tree-lined streets, formal gardens, and a genuine sense of unhurried elegance that has survived intact. It is not a theme park version of England. It is the real thing.

Betty's Café Tea Rooms — the most celebrated tearoom in the north of England — is a five-minute walk from Lamont House. The Victorian Turkish Baths, still operating in their original 1897 Moorish interior, are six minutes away. The Valley Gardens, twenty-seven acres of formal parkland, are on your doorstep.

Harrogate's real value for American visitors is its position. It sits at the centre of a triangle formed by York, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors — three of England's most rewarding destinations, each within an hour. You can base yourself in one place and see all of it.

"My wife and I enjoyed 3 wonderful days in North Yorkshire. They are wonderful hosts and were eager to make our stay so special. The breakfast room was very tastefully decorated, the table settings reflecting calm and classy British elegance, all enhanced by the morning sunlight."

Questions & Answers

Planning Your Visit

How do I get to Harrogate from London?+

The easiest way is by LNER train from London Kings Cross. Direct services run roughly every hour and take approximately 2 hours 53 minutes. A standard advance ticket typically costs from around £23. Harrogate station is about a 10-minute walk from Lamont House. If you are flying into the UK, Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is the nearest regional airport — a taxi to Harrogate takes around 20 minutes, or you can take the A2 Flyer bus for around £2.

What is a B&B and how is it different from a hotel?+

A bed and breakfast is a small, owner-run guest house — typically a private home with a handful of guest rooms. At Lamont House, Mike and Helen live on the premises and personally prepare your breakfast each morning. You get a proper full English (or Yorkshire) breakfast included in the room rate, a key to come and go as you please, and the kind of local knowledge and personal welcome that no hotel can replicate. Think of it as staying with knowledgeable friends who happen to have beautiful rooms.

Is Harrogate a good base for visiting Yorkshire?+

Harrogate is one of the best bases in the north of England. York is 35 minutes by train. Fountains Abbey — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is 30 minutes by car. The Yorkshire Dales (including Grassington, the filming village for All Creatures Great and Small) are 40 minutes by car. Whitby and the North York Moors are about 95 minutes. And Harrogate itself has Betty's Tea Room, the Victorian Turkish Baths, the Valley Gardens, and excellent restaurants.

Do I need a car to get around from Harrogate?+

Not necessarily. York is easy by train (40 minutes, frequent service). Fountains Abbey has a bus connection from Harrogate via Ripon. For the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, a hire car gives you much more flexibility — we can recommend local hire companies. Harrogate town centre is entirely walkable from Lamont House.

What is the best time of year to visit Harrogate?+

Late spring through early autumn (May to September) is the most popular period. The Great Yorkshire Show is in July, the Harrogate Spring Flower Show in April, and the town is particularly beautiful in late summer when the Valley Gardens are in full bloom. That said, Harrogate is a year-round destination — the Turkish Baths and Betty's are just as appealing on a crisp winter afternoon.

Is the breakfast suitable for American visitors with dietary requirements?+

Yes. We offer a full coeliac-safe breakfast option — one of the few B&Bs in Harrogate to do so properly. We can accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Just let us know when you book.

What is the best accommodation near RAF Menwith Hill?+
