Yorkshire & English Heritage

England's north at its finest —
the Yorkshire that draws
visitors from across the world

For Australians and New Zealanders making the long journey to England, Yorkshire is one of the most rewarding destinations. It has everything that draws people to England — medieval abbeys, moorland, market towns, Georgian spa towns — without the crowds of London or the Cotswolds.

Harrogate is an Edwardian spa town with genuine character: the famous Turkish Baths, Betty's Café Tea Rooms, the Valley Gardens, and a restaurant scene that punches well above its size. It is a pleasant place to be based, not just a convenient one.

From Harrogate, you can reach Fountains Abbey (30 minutes by car), York (35 minutes by train), the Yorkshire Dales (40 minutes by car), the North York Moors, and the coast at Whitby (95 minutes). Most visitors find a week here is not enough.

"Helen and Mike are the perfect hosts. This is the 4th time I have stayed with them and I wouldn't go anywhere else! The guest house is beautiful, so clean and spacious. The breakfast is delicious and there is a great choice. The price is very reasonable for the quality of stay you get."

Questions & Answers

Planning Your Visit

How do I get to Harrogate from Australia?+

Most Australians fly into London Heathrow or Manchester. From London Kings Cross, LNER runs direct trains to Harrogate approximately every hour — the journey takes around 2 hours 53 minutes. From Manchester, you can take a train to Leeds (about 55 minutes) and then a connecting service to Harrogate (30 minutes). Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is the closest regional airport to Harrogate — a taxi takes around 20 minutes.

How long should I stay in Harrogate?+

Most Australian visitors find three to five nights in Harrogate ideal. That gives you time to explore the town itself — Betty's, the Turkish Baths, the Valley Gardens — and take two or three day trips into the surrounding countryside. If you are combining Harrogate with York, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors, a week based here is very comfortable.

I have coeliac disease. Can you accommodate me?+

Yes — and properly, not as an afterthought. We offer a full coeliac-safe breakfast with dedicated preparation to avoid cross-contamination. This is something we take seriously, and it is one of the reasons guests with coeliac disease return to Lamont House specifically. Please mention it when you book so we can prepare accordingly.

Is Harrogate a good base for genealogy or heritage research?+

Harrogate is an excellent base for heritage research. The North Yorkshire County Record Office in Northallerton is about 30 minutes away. The Borthwick Institute for Archives in York (35 minutes by train) holds an enormous collection of historical records. The West Yorkshire Archive Service in Leeds is 45 minutes. We are happy to help you plan a research itinerary around your family history.

What is the best time of year to visit from Australia?+

May through September is the most popular window, with the longest days and the best weather. July and August are peak season — the Great Yorkshire Show is in July, and the Valley Gardens are at their best in summer. If you want to avoid the busiest periods, late May, early June, or September are excellent choices. We have a 2-night minimum stay.

Can I visit the All Creatures Great and Small filming locations from Harrogate?+

Yes — Grassington, the village used as 'Darrowby' in the Channel 5 series, is about 40 minutes by car from Harrogate. Askrigg in Wensleydale, used in the original BBC series, is about an hour. The World of James Herriot museum in Thirsk is 30 minutes. We can suggest a driving route that takes in all three in a single day.
