About Harrogate

England's most elegant
spa town

Harrogate is one of England's best-preserved Victorian spa towns — wide tree-lined streets, formal gardens, and a sense of unhurried elegance that has survived intact. It is not a theme park version of England. It is the real thing.

Betty's Café Tea Rooms — the most celebrated tearoom in the north of England — is a five-minute walk from Lamont House. The Victorian Turkish Baths, still operating in their original 1897 Moorish interior, are six minutes away. The Valley Gardens, twenty-seven acres of formal parkland, are on your doorstep.

Harrogate's real value is its position. It sits at the centre of a triangle formed by York, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors — three of England's most rewarding destinations, each within an hour.

Questions & Answers

Planning Your Visit

How do I get from Ireland to Harrogate?+

The most direct route is to fly from Dublin, Cork, or Shannon to Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA). Ryanair and Aer Lingus both serve LBA from Dublin; the flight takes around 55 minutes. From LBA, a taxi to Harrogate takes approximately 20 minutes and costs around £25–30. The A2 Flyer bus also runs hourly from the airport to Harrogate town centre for around £2.

What is a B&B and how is it different from a hotel?+

A bed and breakfast is a small, owner-run guest house — typically a private home with a handful of guest rooms. At Lamont House, Mike and Helen live on the premises and personally prepare your breakfast each morning. You get a full Yorkshire breakfast included in the room rate, a key to come and go as you please, and the kind of local knowledge and personal welcome that no hotel can replicate.

Is Harrogate a good base for visiting Yorkshire?+

Harrogate is one of the best bases in the north of England. York is 35 minutes by train. Fountains Abbey — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is 30 minutes by car. The Yorkshire Dales are 40 minutes by car. Whitby and the North York Moors are about 95 minutes. Harrogate itself has Betty's Tea Room, the Victorian Turkish Baths, the Valley Gardens, and excellent restaurants.

Do I need a car to get around from Harrogate?+

Not necessarily. York is easy by train (35 minutes, frequent service). Fountains Abbey has a bus connection from Harrogate via Ripon. For the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, a hire car gives you much more flexibility — we can recommend local hire companies. Harrogate town centre is entirely walkable from Lamont House.

What is the best time of year to visit Harrogate?+

Late spring through early autumn (May to September) is the most popular period. The Great Yorkshire Show is in July, the Harrogate Spring Flower Show in April, and the town is particularly beautiful in late summer. That said, Harrogate is a year-round destination — the Turkish Baths and Betty's are just as appealing on a crisp autumn afternoon.

Is the breakfast suitable for guests with dietary requirements?+

Yes. We offer a full coeliac-safe breakfast option — one of the few B&Bs in Harrogate to do so properly. We can accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Just let us know when you book.
